How is this result calculated?

To convert hours and minutes to decimal format, the calculator applies hours + minutes / 60. So 7 h 30 becomes 7 + 30 / 60, or 7.5 h.

In the other direction, the whole-number part gives the hours. The decimal part is multiplied by 60 and rounded to produce minutes. If that rounding gives 60, minutes reset to 0 and one hour is added.

Frequently asked questions

What is a decimal hour used for?+

A decimal hour expresses a duration as a number. For example, 7 h 30 becomes 7.5 h. This format is useful for payroll, invoicing, timesheets and spreadsheets.

How do you convert minutes to decimal hours?+

Divide the minutes by 60, then add the result to the whole hours. For example, 45 minutes equals 45 / 60 = 0.75 h, so 8 h 45 becomes 8.75 h.

How do you convert decimal hours to hours and minutes?+

Keep the whole-number part as the hours, then multiply the decimal part by 60 to get minutes. For example, 6.25 h equals 6 h and 15 minutes.

Why can the result be rounded to the next hour?+

When the decimal part gives 59.5 minutes or more, rounding can produce 60 minutes. The calculator carries those 60 minutes to the next hour so it never displays an impossible format like 7 h 60.

Is decimal format the same duration as hours/minutes format?+

Yes, they are two ways to write the same duration. The difference is the format: 7 h 30 is easier to read, while 7.5 h is easier to add or multiply.
