Hours Worked Calculator
Calculate the time worked between a start time and an end time, break deducted.
Optional. Deducted once from the total, not per range.
How is this result calculated?
For each range, the duration is calculated as end time − start time. If the end time is numerically earlier than the start time, it is treated as happening the next day (a night shift): 24 hours are then added before the subtraction.
The durations of all ranges are added together, then the break (in minutes) is deducted once from that total. The result is floored to 0: it can never be negative, even if the entered break exceeds the total time of the ranges.
Frequently asked questions
How are multiple time ranges within the same day handled?+
Each range added with "+ Add a range" is calculated independently, and all the resulting durations are added together before the global break is deducted. This is useful for a split day, for example a morning shift followed by an afternoon shift after a long gap that isn't a simple lunch break.
How does the calculation handle a night shift that ends the next day?+
If the entered end time is numerically earlier than the start time (for example a start at 22:00 and an end at 06:00), the calculator treats the end time as happening the next day and adds 24 hours before computing the duration. The result is then correctly 8 hours, never a negative value.
What's the difference between the hours/minutes format and the decimal format?+
The hours/minutes format (e.g. "7 h 30") is the most readable for everyday use. The decimal format (e.g. "7.5 h") is often needed for payroll or invoicing calculations. To freely convert between the two formats, see /heures-decimales.
How is the break deducted from the time worked?+
The break entered (in minutes) is deducted once from the total, after adding up all the ranges — it is not split or deducted range by range. If the break exceeds the total time worked, the result is floored to 0 instead of showing a negative value.
Is this calculator related to the hourly wage calculator?+
Yes: once you have your time worked from here, you can use it with the hourly wage calculator (/salaire-horaire) to estimate your hourly rate or pay from the hours actually worked.
