VAT Calculator (Net / Gross)
Instantly convert an amount between net, VAT and gross.
How is this result calculated?
This calculator applies the standard conversion formulas between net (tax-excluded) and gross (tax-included) amounts: Gross = Net × (1 + rate) and Net = Gross / (1 + rate). The VAT amount is then the difference between the gross and net amounts.
Choose the conversion direction and a rate (a common French preset or a custom rate between 0 and 100%): all three amounts update instantly as you type, rounded to the nearest cent.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a net price and a gross price?+
The net price (tax-excluded) is the amount before VAT is applied. The gross price (tax-included) includes VAT and corresponds to the amount actually paid by the end customer.
What are the VAT rates in France and what do they apply to?+
The standard rate of 20% applies to most goods and services. The intermediate rate of 10% covers things like restaurants or transport. The reduced rate of 5.5% mainly applies to food products, energy, or books. A special rate of 2.1% also exists for certain specific cases (reimbursable medicines, press).
How do you calculate VAT by hand?+
To go from net to gross, multiply the net amount by (1 + rate). To go from gross to net, divide the gross amount by (1 + rate). VAT itself is the difference between the gross amount and the net amount.
Can an individual reclaim VAT?+
No, in principle. VAT is a tax borne by the end consumer. Only businesses registered for VAT can reclaim it on their professional purchases, under certain conditions.
Why are the displayed amounts sometimes rounded?+
Net, VAT, and gross amounts are rounded to the nearest cent, as on an invoice. Small rounding differences may appear between net + VAT and the displayed gross amount.
