Percentage Change Calculator
Calculate the absolute and percentage change between an initial value and a final value.
0 is accepted: the percentage change will then be undefined.
Increase — Increase between the initial and final value.
How is this result calculated?
Absolute change is calculated as final value − initial value. Percentage change relates that difference to the initial value: (absolute change / initial value) × 100.
If the initial value is 0, this second formula implies a division by zero: the percentage is then flagged as undefined, while the absolute change remains shown.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between absolute and percentage change?+
Absolute change is a raw difference in the same unit as your values (e.g. euros). Percentage change expresses that same difference relative to the initial value, which lets you compare changes across different scales.
Why does an initial value of 0 cause an issue?+
Percentage change is calculated by dividing the difference by the initial value. Dividing by 0 is mathematically undefined: the percentage is then undefined, even though the absolute difference remains perfectly valid and is still shown.
How should I interpret a negative change?+
A negative change signals a decrease between the initial and final value: the final value is lower than the starting value.
What is this calculator useful for?+
Tracking how a price, salary, population, revenue, or any figure evolves between two measurements over time.
How is this different from the simple percentage calculator?+
The regular percentage calculator answers questions like "X% of Y" or "add X%". This one specifically answers "how much did I change between two values?". See also /pourcentage.
