Bytes kB MB GB KiB MiB GiB Converter
Convert data sizes without confusing decimal and binary units.
The current standard separates the two notations: kB/MB/GB multiply by 1000, KiB/MiB/GiB multiply by 1024.
Drive makers generally use decimal GB/TB. Some systems display binary values, sometimes with ambiguous labels.
How is this result calculated?
The calculator first converts the entered value to bytes using the selected notation, then displays equivalent values in that same notation.
Decimal notation uses kB, MB, GB and TB with powers of 1000. IEC binary notation uses KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB with powers of 1024.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between kB, MB, GB and KiB, MiB, GiB?+
kB, MB and GB are decimal units: each step multiplies by 1000. KiB, MiB and GiB are IEC binary units: each step multiplies by 1024.
Is 1 GB 1000 MB or 1024 MiB?+
1 GB is 1000 MB in decimal notation. 1 GiB is 1024 MiB in binary notation. Mixing GB and GiB is the main source of confusion.
Why does a 1 TB drive look smaller in the system?+
A drive advertised as 1 TB contains 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Displayed as binary TiB, that is about 0.909 TiB.
Which notation should I choose?+
For commercial drive or network capacity, decimal is often the right match. For memory, blocks, file systems or low-level values, choose IEC binary when the value is based on powers of 2.
