How is this result calculated?

A business day is defined here as a day from Monday to Friday, excluding official French public holidays when that option is enabled. Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) are always excluded from the final count, whether or not that option is enabled.

The bounds of the date range (start date and end date) are included or excluded independently of each other, based on your choice: the number of calendar days, weekdays, and business days adjusts accordingly.

The 8 fixed public holidays (January 1st, May 1st, May 8th, July 14th, August 15th, November 1st, November 11th, December 25th) are calculated directly for every year covered by the date range entered. The 3 moving public holidays (Easter Monday, Ascension Day, Whit Monday) are determined from the date of Easter, itself calculated with the Meeus/Jones/Butcher algorithm — a variant of Gauss's algorithm for the Gregorian calendar, implemented directly in JavaScript. No fixed date table is used: any past or future year is covered.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a business day and a working day?+

"Working day" broadly covers every day people work, Monday through Saturday (excluding Sunday and public holidays). "Business day" refers to the days actually worked by most companies, Monday through Friday. This calculator uses the "business day" definition (Monday to Friday).

Which public holidays does this calculator take into account?+

The 11 official French public holidays: January 1st, Easter Monday, May 1st, May 8th, Ascension Day, Whit Monday, July 14th, August 15th, All Saints' Day, November 11th, and Christmas Day. The site targets a French audience even in its English version, so it uses the same French public holidays as the French calculator, only the interface is in English. The moving dates tied to Easter are recalculated for every year covered by your date range, rather than read from a fixed table.

How are the start and end dates handled?+

You choose independently whether the start date and the end date count toward the total, via two separate settings. By default, both bounds are included in the result.

Are regional public holidays (Alsace-Moselle) taken into account?+

No. Good Friday and December 26th, which are only public holidays in the Alsace-Moselle departments, are not included: this calculator is limited to the official public holidays that apply across all of mainland France.

How is this different from a simple day count between two dates?+

A plain day count between two dates counts every calendar day, weekends included. This calculator goes further by removing Saturdays and Sundays, and optionally public holidays, to give you the number of days actually worked.
