Bill Splitter
Split a bill between several people, tip included.
Leave empty or at 0 while you enter the number of guests.
How is this result calculated?
In equal split mode, the amount per person is calculated as (total amount × (1 + tip/100)) / number of people.
In custom split mode, each person enters their share of the total amount. The tip is calculated on the total amount, then split in proportion to each person's share: person's tip = total tip × (person's share / sum of shares). If the entered shares don't add up to the total amount, a non-blocking warning is shown but the calculation still runs with the entered shares.
Frequently asked questions
How is the tip split in custom mode?+
The tip is calculated on the total bill amount, then split in proportion to each person's share: the larger a person's share, the larger the portion of the tip they cover. The formula is: person's tip = total tip × (person's share / sum of all shares).
What happens if the custom shares don't add up to the bill total?+
A non-blocking warning is shown, but the calculation still runs: the tip is split in proportion to the shares actually entered, regardless of the mismatch. Double-check your amounts if that isn't what you expected.
Is tipping mandatory?+
It depends heavily on the country. In some places a service charge is already included in the price and tipping is optional, while in others tipping is customary or expected as a significant part of service workers' income. Check local norms for wherever you're dining.
How are rounding differences handled?+
Amounts are calculated using the precision of your inputs and then displayed rounded to the nearest cent. Small rounding differences between the sum of the per-person amounts and the displayed total can appear, with no practical impact.
What is this calculator useful for?+
For a meal between friends, an equal split is usually enough. For an event where people didn't consume the same things (different meals, drinks, guests leaving early), a custom split lets everyone pay their exact share while still splitting the tip fairly.
